The Greatest Honor, The Hardest Role: My Journey as a Caregiver
When you grow up with someone, your bond is built on a foundation of shared secrets, embarrassing fashion phases, and the unspoken promise of a lifetime of memories. You plan for road trips, weddings, and growing old together.
You never plan for cancer.
When my childhood best friend, Jessica, was diagnosed, the world shifted on its axis. Suddenly, our late-night phone calls about life and career transformed into text chains about medical appointments, surgeries, and estate planning. I stepped into a role I never expected, but one I wouldn't trade for the world: Jessica’s caregiver.
If this experience has taught me anything, it’s that true friendship isn't just about showing up for the celebrations but standing firm in the trenches.
Caring for Jessica has been one the hardest things I have ever done, but it has also been the greatest privilege of my life. It has redefined my understanding of strength, resilience, and unconditional love.
To anyone else out there navigating the complex, emotional, and exhausting world of caregiving for a loved one: you are not alone, your efforts matter, and the love you are pouring into your person is making a world of difference.
