Hans Zimnoch

Given all I've got...Love you Tash

What an incredible journey this has been!  Sadly no blood to report, but I sure as hell brought the sweat and tears.  I never in my wildest dreams would have expected the kind of support I got some family, friends, colleagues, clients, and strangers.  We are living in a world that is filled with negativity, hate, fear, cruelty, and stupidity.  Oh not to mention we are locked in our homes and fighting another unseen disease with little certainty around what will happen next.

BUT despite that, I see nothing but opportunity, positivity, hope, empowerment, and love.  Every day I have had messages of encouragement from people, and I've seen money thrown at this like it was going out of style. People have cheered for me, they have smiled for me, they have laughed with me, and cried too.  I've had an electricity surrounding my body for over a week now.  The power that all of you have given me is something incredibly powerful. Thank you!

Earlier this year I was 240lbs of mush.  I was eating too much junk food, not working out enough, stressing about work, and I wasn't doing a bloody thing about it.

Fast forward to Sept 2020, and I am a leaner, meaner, Peloton spinning machine!!! It hasn't been easy. I push through pain, I get on the bike when I don't want to, I turn the watts up and my legs scream.  But it's worth every ounce of sweat and toil.  The benefits of physical activity and a good diet are too many to list.

I didn't realise when I bought my Peloton in March that I was training for this event, but not everything in life is planned now is it?

I did 113km straight on it today.  I needed 108 to hit my distance goal.  But I did 113 to honour Natasha. 13 was her lucky number, and what a fitting way to end my journey.

I love you Natasha. Although I didn't have you in my life for long enough, it was truly the best times I ever had.  I am so grateful to be your brother.  Thank you for giving me the Doggystle album in '93.  Even though Mum didn't let me listen to it for several years, I cherish it to this day.

Thanks to everyone that has supported. No more updates from me. Deadline to give is midnight PST.  So any final acts of generosity are welcome.

Thank you again for sharing in this journey with me.

It's been an honour.

xoxo

Hans

Charge of the Hans Brigade

On the eve of what is a very important day for me tomorrow, I am struck with emotion. I am struck with thanks, gratitude, and love.

I am also struck with sadness as I think of my sister. Memories flood back to days at Hammersmith ave in the toronto beaches. so many fun times in our home and back garden. we used to have sleepovers parties (with nobody else invited) in our basement and just stay up talking all night the two of us. i remember watching so many movies down in our basement and rolling around laughing, or just watching in awe the films on the screen. How we loved Wayne's world, and major league. I watched it the other night, and cheered cleveland on the whole way.

as i looked for inspiration for this post, and i thought of those fond memories with my dearest sister, I was struck with a vivid memory....me on a horse.  A beautiful tan horse named bobby.  I used to ride him so hard that the springs would come out and I'd be sideways on the floor.

i used to ride bobby as I watched some of my favourite western, war, and racing movies.  Far lap, she wore a yellow ribbon, and the charge of the light brigade.

The charge of the light brigade with errol flynn. oh how it inspired me as a child. how i marvelled at the brave 600 as they attacked, attacked, attacked. outnumbered and outgunned.   I felt so awful for errol and the atrocities of war he had faced.

As i thought about these memories, i was reminded that we are currently fighting a war against cancer. this is a true battle, with real consequences.  we may not see it the way we see violence on television, or as we are blasted with advertisements, but its' out there.  We have to keep attacking. We have to keep fighting, and doing everything we can to end this war against cancer.

We have to give as many people an opportunity to survive as we can. we all have it in us to help. so please give if you haven't. please share if you haven't.

tomorrow i ride into battle on my trusty peloton steed.  i shall be fearless, I shall be brave, and I will not give up.

Thanks for sharing in my journey.

xoxo

The Charge of the Light Brigade
I
Half a league, half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
   Rode the six hundred.
“Forward, the Light Brigade!
Charge for the guns!” he said.
Into the valley of Death
   Rode the six hundred.

II
“Forward, the Light Brigade!”
Was there a man dismayed?
Not though the soldier knew
   Someone had blundered.
   Theirs not to make reply,
   Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die.
   Into the valley of Death
   Rode the six hundred.

III
Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
   Volleyed and thundered;
Stormed at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of hell
   Rode the six hundred.

IV
Flashed all their sabres bare,
Flashed as they turned in air
Sabring the gunners there,
Charging an army, while
   All the world wondered.
Plunged in the battery-smoke
Right through the line they broke;
Cossack and Russian
Reeled from the sabre stroke
   Shattered and sundered.
Then they rode back, but not
   Not the six hundred.

V
Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon behind them
   Volleyed and thundered;
Stormed at with shot and shell,
While horse and hero fell.
They that had fought so well
Came through the jaws of Death,
Back from the mouth of hell,
All that was left of them,
   Left of six hundred.

VI
When can their glory fade?
O the wild charge they made!
   All the world wondered.
Honour the charge they made!
Honour the Light Brigade,
   Noble six hundred!

What do you do when you surpass your goals?

You set new ones!

Hit my personal target of $5k.  Chose to join team Yowzers with a goal to get them into first place for the team donations, and BOOM we are in first.  Not going to let that lead drop.

Decided to up my personal target today to $8k.  Nearly got there already, so I've decided to push for $10k.  BOOM let's do this!

As a final push on Friday, I am going to do 100km straight.  We are doing a virtual ride across Canada starting at 830am PST, and I'll commence my final push then.

Should I setup a live stream, or spare everyone having to watch me sweat?

Time to push harder, time to ask for more, time to give more, and time to keep crushing goals.

No time to sit back and relax! I want more!

Despite how hard I try, I can never look as cool as Natasha (pictured) on top of my Mum's old Buick.  This photo would have been from one of our first baseball trips to Cleveland and other US cities.  How we loved running around the stadium's and spending our hard earned money on pitching machines, pennants, and hard helmets.  We even made sure the beer man found his way to my Dad in the bleachers.  Happy Days :)

I'm happy that Natasha looks cool as a cucumber, but I'm afraid it's no rest for the wicked.  We still have a few days left.  Please give all you can, please reach out to your networks.

Every dollar you give can help give a family special memories of baseball trips.  Memories of jumping up and down on hotel beds, of chewing gum in Mum's car, and of eating more waffles than anyone can ever need in a life time.  Oh and of some baseball too!

Please help.

Thanks for all the help you've already given.  It means the world to me and my family.

Made it to $5k!!! Now it's Zydeco Time!!!

Thank you so much to everyone for your support. I am truly overwhelmed!

Just put on some celebratory music by Clifton Chenier - Frenchin the Boogie: - https://open.spotify.com/album/736U6Ojz4gPcvUuqiNsij4?si=HoV9nauPQDClVdy42V7PUg

Who doesn't love a little Zydeco? Can't wait to get back to New Orleans when travel permits.

Still plenty of time to give, can't wait to see how much more I can raise for the cause??!?!?!

Tears of Joy

Sat on my bike last night, and was utterly exhausted.  Watched the Lakers beat the Nuggets despite Jokic lighting them up to finish the game.

I put on one of my favourite sets of all time. Above and Beyond live from Bangalore, and that was all I needed to get my legs pumping again.

Check out this amazing video which is a great intro to the event - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3qOUycE9QE

We are so lucky to have access to music, medicine, education, etc where we live.  Hell, I have 3 different pairs of bluetooth headphones.  I have nothing to complain about.  I do miss live music terribly.  It's not the bars I miss, or the restaurants, but being on a dance floor. Letting go of everything and just moving to the music.

We do still have music though, and this recording I can listen to forever - https://soundcloud.com/aboveandbeyond/abgt001

I thought of my sister and cried while I rode last night. I was in a lot of pain, but combined with the music and memories of Tash I pushed through.  The hardest and easiest ride I have had in ages.

This journey on the bike, and in life isn't easy, but it's worth the ride.

Turn the volume up loud today!  Only a few days left to get your donations in.  Please send out to your networks as well, we need all the help we can get.

All my love,

Hans

Smoke, Moths, and my sore back side!

Woke up today feeling really lucky to be alive.  I had a long work day yesterday, and opted to not cycle for the cause.

I woke up early this morning however dying to get on the bike.  I started to think about my sister, and how she didn't have an option when it came to fighting her disease. She had to wake up every single day and handle whatever treatment was thrown at her.

We are all so lucky to have our health, but also the freedom that comes along with it.  It's easy to take things for granted in life, but please be grateful for everything you have.

My 3rd ride down, and physically it doesn't feel any easier, but mentally it does.  I am overwhelmed with thanks for everyone that is contributing to my fundraising/physical challenge that I have taken on.

Looking forward to doing more and more with this challenge.

For those of you curious what tunes I have been riding to, please check out this playlist.  Some really great artists from all over the world, and a few dance classics with melodic vocals to sing along to.

Some quality BPM to get your RPM's up.

Music always helps me take on the long rides, the short ones too.

Billions of blue blistering barnacles!

Day 2 and back on the bike.

I was inspired today as some of the instructors spoke about the importance of mental health awareness this month.  I did my target of 60 mins, and then stuck around for another 20 minute cool down. Thought of some of the friends I have lost over the years, whether it be to health, or mental health issues.  It serves as good motivation to stick out the hard miles.

It's not easy getting back into training. But the pain is worth the gain. Funny to think a few months back, I would have thought nothing of the workout I did today.

Sorry for anyone walking by my apartment though.  Tomorrow you can avoid the blasphemy by staying away from Chinatown around 5-7pm.

Pip pip!

Back on the Bike!

After over a month not sitting on a bicycle, I was quite pleased to have survived a 50 minute ride.

I was also able to pat myself on the back as Vancouver currently ranks number one in the world for lowest air quality.

Can't wait for tomorrow's ride!

Riding to fight Cancer

Everyone has been touched by cancer at one point in their lives.  I sadly lost my sister Natasha to Leukemia back in '95. That’s why this September I’m getting on my Peloton to try and raise awareness for Cancer Research.  I will always miss my sister terribly, but I can't think of a better way to honour her memory than by getting on a bike and sweating myself into a puddle, as I blast incredible music.  She is somebody that introduced me to so many of the artist and sounds I cherish and love today. I also want to honour those who fought, and still fight this horrible disease.

Please take a few moments to make a big difference, and give generously to my donation page.

Anything is appreciated. On a side note, I am always here to talk to anyone that has ever dealt with loss of any kind. Sending big love to everyone out there that participates and donates.

Keep on fighting!

Hi Hans, great work on generating so much support for cancer support. Dan explained to me about your interest in staying as an individual contributor - all good. I know we've talked about your sister but your post reminded me of your story. I also lost my lovely mother far too young to cancer and like you the removal of her physical presence leaves a hole. Hopefully, our small effort with this event leads us closer to a cure for cancer. Keep up the good work.
